Vaginismus, an exclusively female disorder characterized by an involuntary and persistent constriction of the outer third of vagina that prevents penile vaginal intercourse. Vaginismus is not limited to sexual situations alone. Women with his disorder are unable to insert tampons or permit the insertion of a speculum during gynecological examination. Many women with vaginismus can go through all stages of sexual cycle including arousal and orgasm. Vaginismus may be situational or complete. This psycho physiological syndrome may affect women of any age and may vary considerably in severity. Most of these cases present as unconsummated marriages. This condition most often afflicts highly educated women and those in higher socioeconomic status. A careful history should be obtained and examination helps to diagnose above condition and counseling and treatment helps to resolve above problems. Women should not feel shy and advisable to seek help by qualified doctors.
